It is reported that Tottenham have agreed to sign Atletico Madrid’s Toby Alderweireld for a fee of €18m.
The Belgian defender spent last season on loan at Spurs’ Premier League rivals Southampton.
However, the 26-year-old’s potential move to White Hart Lane is set to be highly controversial, due to the terms of the deal that took Alderweireld to St Mary’s on a temporary basis last year.
The agreement included the option for the Saints to make the transfer permanent this summer, unless Atleti paid them €1.5m to cancel the clause. Southampton claim that the deadline for that to have happened has now passed, meaning the Rojiblancos are legally obliged to sell to them.
Should Alderweireld’s move to Tottenham be completed, Southampton manager Ronald Koeman has warned his club could mount a legal challenge against the transfer.
