Atleti nearing Motta swoop?

Atletico Madrid are reportedly closing in on the signing of Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Thiago Motta on a free transfer.

The Italy international has only a year left on his contract, but Marca claims he will be allowed to join Los Colchoneros for nothing after PSG agreed to write off the remainder of his deal.

It would provide a welcome coup for Atleti, who have agreed to spend €55m on attacking pair Luciano Vietto and Jackson Martinez but also want to bolster their midfield.

Atleti initially held back their interest after they grew suspicious Motta was using the club as a bargaining chip for an improved contract with the Parisians.

However, it appears that the club have decided to let Motta follow his own destiny as testament to his consistent performances since arriving from Inter in January 2012.

Brazil-born Motta began his career at Barcelona and spent the 2007-08 season with Atleti, only for injuries to ravage his spell in the capital.
