Godin hopes Miranda stays

Diego Godin hopes Joao Miranda stays at Atletico Madrid, but has faith in Uruguay colleague Jose Gimenez.

Gimenez is set to feature for his country in the Copa America quarter-final against Chile, alongside Godin, and Godin was asked about the youngster’s state of mind ahead of such a big game.

“He hasn’t said much. For his age he is very experienced in the national team and at Atletico, in big games,” Godin replied, AS reports.

“The truth is he has always shown great personality and a lot of character for his age.

“I work very well with him because he’s a great players, and all great players complement each other. He adapts to any partner, system or team and that makes everything easier.”

Gimenez could be the beneficiary if Miranda completes a rumoured move to Inter but Godin remains hopeful his long-term centre-back partner stays put.

“I wish Miranda the best because he is my teammate and my friend. I always wish him well. Hopefully he stays with Atletico because he is a great player who has brought much joy to the fans,” Godin continued.

“If he leaves it will be a personal decision or one from the club and it will be best for everyone. You have to wish him the best because he is a great person. It will be a huge loss.

“Atletico people already know [what Miranda has given to the club]. He’s given a lot, a lot of joy, and a lot of commitment to the team and the club. I hope he stays.”
