Arsenal miss out on Vermaelen bonus

Arsenal won’t receive a bonus of €4m after Barcelona won the Champions League as Thomas Vermaelen didn’t feature in the competition.

Vermaelen moved to Camp Nou from the Emirates Stadium in the summer of 2014 but an injury-hit campaign meant he only made his debut in the final League game of the season.

It was reported that the Gunners would receive part of the bonuses agreed in the transfer after Barca beat Juventus to land the Champions League and complete the treble, but Sport have reported that isn’t the case.

Vermaelen didn’t play in the competition so, under UEFA regulations, doesn’t receive a winners’ medal and isn’t considered to have won the competition, and so Barca don’t have to pay the Premier League club anything.
