Escriba: I won’t abandon Elche

Fran Escriba insists he will not rush to jump ship in the event that Elche are relegated to Segunda B for unpaid bills.

The Valencians are due to play another season in La Liga after comfortably avoiding ‘second-year syndrome’, but they have until May 29 to come up with €8m to the Spanish tax authorities or face the prospect of demotion to the third tier.

“We had a good season, but our attitude was outstanding,” the Coach said Saturday’s goalless draw with Levante.

“I’m not unhappy with [our performance] because, despite the lack of tension and attacking moves, we didn’t play badly.

“We had the better chances and stayed up again after three months of difficulties.

“[On the topic of his future], the most important thing is to sit down as soon as possible and seek what’s best for the club.

“If we’re punished in our case, renewals will be difficult to carry out so there may be a need to rebuild the squad.

“However, I can still believe in a weakened project over one that’s more powerful economically.

“Whatever I do, I’ll make a measured decision, but I will first talk to the President and sporting director.”
