Xavi says Barca farewell

Xavi Hernandez has thanked everyone for the time he has spent at Barcelona. ‘I am the happiest man in the world today.’

The legendary midfielder signed off in La Liga as Barca drew 2-2 with Deportivo La Coruna and, although he could be part of the Copa del Rey final next week at Camp Nou, was given an emotional farewell after the game.

“Thank you very much for everything. I am the happiest man in the world today and the 17 seasons I’ve been here,” Xavi is quoted as saying after the final whistle by AS.

“I would like to thank my family, my friends, my wife and everyone here. Your support has been unconditional. You are amazing.

“And whatever they say this is the best club in the world. And finally, as mentioned by the Coach, this isn’t over.

“We want two titles and we want to be here [celebrating the Champions League win] with you in Barcelona.”

Xavi also gave a post-match interview to Canal+ were he admitted he had broken a promise not to be sad, saying it was unavoidable.

“It was impossible. I tried to hold out but it was impossible as there is so much emotion,” he added.

“There are a lot of extraordinary memories. I couldn’t be happier. I’ve had a fantastic career. I still do. We have the League and two more finals and I want to do well.

“This is amazing. There are mixed feelings. I think I’m going to miss Barca more than Barca is going to miss me.

“I’ve worn this shirt for 25 years. It’s been my life. Barcelona is greater than anyone.”
