AFE refuse to rule out La Liga strike

The Spanish Professional Footballers’ Association (AFE) have not ruled out calling a strike for round 37 of La Liga, scheduled for May 17.

According to Cadena SER’s ‘El Larguero’ programme, the AFE are unhappy at some of the criteria laid down by the new law concerning the distribution of television money, which is set to be implemented for the 2016-17 season but could be pushed through before then.

It is understood there are two key points the AFE are not in agreement with. Firstly, they claim that footballers are not considered among the elite athletes who will benefit from the deal.

A reported one per cent of revenue is destined for athletes who are not footballers, whereas in countries like England 1.5 per cent goes to the players.

The other sticking point is that the AFE believes the share-out for teams from the Primera and Segunda divisions will only increase the gap in salaries between the players in the top two divisions.

The new law states that 90 per cent of income will go to Primera clubs with just 10 per cent allocated to those in La Segunda.

The AFE claims this figure is disproportionate and cites France as an example, where the split is 65 per cent to 35 per cent.
