Asenjo injury blow for Villarreal

Villarreal have confirmed that goalkeeper Sergio Asenjo tore the cruciate ligament in his right knee against Atletico Madrid.

The 25-year-old fell awkwardly when coming to claim a corner during the match and immediately gestured to the club’s medical staff that something serious had happened, after which he was forced to leave the pitch in obvious distress.

It is the third time Asenjo has suffered such an injury, both in his right and left knees, the first time being when he played for Atletico Madrid in 2010 and then when he was on loan at Malaga the following year.

Tests on Thursday morning at the Hospital Rey Don Jaime in Castellon have confirmed the original diagnosis and he is expected to be out of action for a minimum of six months.
