Asenjo calls on Villarreal fans

Villarreal goalkeeper Sergio Asenjo has called on the club’s fans to get behind the team in the Copa del Rey clash with Barcelona on Wednesday.

The Yellow Submarine face an uphill task against Luis Enrique’s men, having lost the semi-final first leg 3-1 at the Camp Nou, but Asenjo believes his team is still in with a chance of reaching a first-ever final.

“I ask the fans to come to the stadium and support this team. I think we deserve it,” Asenjo told a Press conference.

“This is team that always gives their all and we’ll try to get through to the final. We know it will be tough but I think we’ll get chances and if we pull together we can do well.

“We must play a very good game so it’s important for everyone that we go into it in the hope of continuing our good form.

“We are playing well and are a young team that is eager to keep improving. I think that shows every day.”

Asenjo was one of the team’s star performers in the 1-1 draw with Real Madrid at the weekend and says he is going through a purple patch in his career.

“I’m very happy and in some of my best form. It’s thanks to the love and support of the coaching staff and they help me to grow every day,” he explained.
