‘We must match Atleti’s intensity’

Sergio Asenjo says he is unsurprised by parent club Atletico Madrid’s continued rise, as he advises Villarreal on how to match them this weekend.

The Yellow Submarine host Atleti this Sunday evening with their first-choice goalkeeper impressing on a loan spell from Los Colchoneros.

For Asenjo, to see the Madrid side arrive this weekend with only the one defeat all season comes as no surprise.

“It is something I am not surprised by because the squad is the same as last year, with the addition of great players who have adapted well,” the 24-year-old considered to reporters today.

“They are transmitting a great strength and are a team that is up there on merit and because they are doing things right.

“My future with them? I’m focused on contributing as much as I can in the highest number of games possible to help Villarreal.

“This weekend? If we put in the same intensity as they do, we can cause them problems. If we fail to maintain that intensity, we will not have chances and they will.

“They are very strong defensively and have a lot in attack, so we must be vigiliant throughout the game.”

Diego Costa worked on the sidelines today in training but is expected to mark his call-up to the Spain squad with an appearance at El Madrigal.

“I have known him for years and we all knew he was going to explode soon and that his time would come. He is a player that gives everything in every game and whoever the opponent is.

“I do not believe that because he has been called up to the national team that it will change the way he plays or that he does not have the nerves for it.”
