Bartomeu: ‘Only tough sides remain’

Barcelona President Josep Maria Bartomeu says any opponent will be ‘dangerous’ in the semi-final stages of the Champions League.

Bartomeu saw the Catalans easily overcome Paris Saint-Germain 2-0 on Tuesday night to record a 5-1 aggregate win and acknowledged they will need to fight hard to reach the final in Berlin.

“Every team that gets through to this stage is strong and any opponent will be dangerous,” he told reporters post-match.

“We have a lot of confidence whoever we draw because we are a very competitive team.”

Nonetheless, Bartomeu was fairly guarded when discussing possible rivals, in particular former Barca boss Pep Guardiola’s Bayern Munich, who mounted a comeback to thrash Porto 6-1 in their quarter-final tie.

“Guardiola is a legend in Barcelona and brought excellence to this team,” he commented, before praising Andres Iniesta’s contribution to the win over PSG.

“He led from the centre of the pitch. His technique is superb, as he showed with his assist for Neymar’s goal, and even the PSG directors were applauding.”

Bartomeu said he is now looking forward to the derby with Espanyol this Saturday.

“We have to win it. We are so close to winning La Liga and can’t afford to make any mistakes,” he claimed.
