Chelsea to target Godin?

Chelsea have reportedly entered the race to sign Atletico Madrid defender Diego Godin.

According to the Mirror, the Uruguayan has recently attracted interest from Manchester United but now Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho is set to turn to him in his search for a new centre-back.

The Portuguese’s first choice is Real Madrid’s Raphael Varane but it is unlikely the Frenchman will be allowed to leave the Santiago Bernabeu. As a result, Mourinho may turn his attention to Godin, who has a €35m release clause written into his contract.

Both teams would allegedly need to active this clause if negotiations for the 29-year-old are to take place, as Atleti boss Diego Simeone would be loathe to lose one of the mainstays of his team.

Godin, who has made 28 La Liga appearances for Atleti this season and scored three goals, has a contract at the Vicente Calderon that expires in June 2018.
