Emery cautious despite Athletic win

Unai Emery has demanded caution from his Sevilla players, despite his ‘joy’ with their 2-0 victory over Athletic Bilbao on Saturday.

Early goals from Aleix Vidal and Carlos Bacca earned the Andalucians their fourth win on the bounce and put them within a solitary point of Atletico Madrid in the last remaining Champions League qualifying spot.

“We knew the importance of starting the match with pace and scoring a quick goal,” he said after the game.

“At our stadium, we feel strong. We try to impose our style of play on our opponents and beat them.

“The competitiveness of the team means we always look to overcome our opponents. We’re at good level, but we must continue to improve.

“We’ve found [Ever] Banega’s best position. He feels important here and has earned the trust of teammates.

“In a normal League you almost qualify for the Champions League with 20 wins, but in this one you need more.

“I’ve been backed during both the good and bad times [at Sevilla]. My position is that I’m at ease here.

“Sevilla are happy to be in Europe. We have to stay focused [on the Europa League], but we still have other, higher objectives. I dream of Sevilla qualifying for the Champions League.

“It’s a joyous time for us, but we still have to be cautious.”
