Villarreal forward Luciano Vietto has confessed that he dreams of playing alongside Lionel Messi one day.
The 21-year-old has impressed in his debut season with the Yellow Submarine since arriving from Racing Club last summer, prompting speculation that he could soon follow his Argentine compatriot to Camp Nou.
“It’s very important [that I continue my good form],” he began in an interview with Ole.
“We’ve been doing very well collectively and I’m happy as an individual, but I can’t and don’t want to stay at my current level. I have to keep striving to improve and continue helping the team.
“[On links with Real Madrid and Barcelona], it’s something that I take very quietly. I try to think only about Villarreal in the training and give answers game by game.
“I use these rumours as motivation to keep working hard and improving. I have no doubt that I’m doing things the right way.
“[My reunion with Diego Simeone] was very emotional. I hadn’t crossed paths with him since our Racing days, so I took the opportunity to greet and thank him.
“Maybe one day we’ll work together at another team. If not, I’ll remember him with great fondness.
“He’s a very capable Coach and devotes much time to his work, along with his coaching staff and beyond having a very good squad with players of international stature.
“[Facing Lionel Messi] was something unique. He’s a great person and him giving me his shirt was a great gesture. It’s a memory which will stay for the rest of my life.
“Everybody dreams of being able to play alongside Messi. It would be a dream for me, of course.”
