Villa admits Xavi contact over MLS

New York City striker David Villa admits he has spoken to former Barcelona teammate Xavi Hernandez over a move to Major League Soccer.

Spain international Xavi has been linked with a move to both the United States and Qatar this season, although he has still to come to a firm decision regarding his future.

Nonetheless, Villa has commented on speculation that the 35-year-old could be set to join him in New York.

“Yes, we’ve spoken, but at the moment Xavi is at Barcelona and has, I think, another year left to run on his contract,” Villa is quoted as saying by AS.

“I haven’t pushed him over his future plans and even if he did tell me something I wouldn’t reveal what it was.

“Xavi would fit into any League in any part of the world. I’d be delighted if he came here as he’s a great player and a close friend.”

Villa claims he is enjoying life in the MLS and has made an impressive start, scoring New York’s first-ever home goal in the 2-0 win over New England Revolution.

“It was a great moment. When people look back at the history of the club in future years they’ll remember the first goal and it’s an honour that I was fortunate to be the scorer of it.

“It’s certainly one of the most important goals of my career,” he added.
