Schalke are close to securing Real Madrid midfielder Sami Khedira on a Bosman free transfer at the end of the season, reports Sport Bild.
The 27-year-old has completed just 570 minutes for Los Blancos this season after recovering from a long-term injury, and the newspaper claims it is the player’s intention to return to his native Germany.
Khedira is free to talk to other clubs as a result of Madrid’s reluctance to offer him a renewal, and the Royal Blues – his side’s opponents in the Champions League last 16 – have reportedly begun talks over a pre-contractual agreement.
Bayern Munich were once considered the favourites to land Khedira, who joined Madrid from Stuttgart in 2010, while interest from Premier League teams had been speculated in the media, but none of this has materialised.
