Navas: Barca aren’t favourites

Manchester City winger Jesus Navas has rejected the suggestion Barcelona are favourites to progress in the Champions League tie between the teams.

City and Barca begin their two-legged battle next week and the Spain international has spoken to Marca in advance of the first leg, which takes place at the Etihad Stadium.

“I don’t see Barca as favourites. It’ll be very even. I think both teams have the chance to go through and it will be a very good contest,” he said.

“City will have to think and be smart. The tie starts at our ground and the key is to have a lot of intensity there. From there we can get a result that gives us options at Camp Nou.

“I don’t think our style should change by our opponent. We have a clear idea and although there is still a few days until the game, I think we have to continue on the same line.

“We are very fast in attack and we like to counter. I think that could be harmful to Barca. Everyone knows that’s one of our main weapons.

“It will be very nice to meet Jordi Alba. We both play with speed and it will be a very challenging mini-game.

“Who would win in a 100m race? I don’t know. It would be nice to find out but we never have.

“I have a good relationship with him, from the national team and the times we’ve played against each other. It will be a nice contest, and if it’s against someone else, then that’s good too.”

Navas was also asked about compatriot David Silva, and where he stands in relation to the other stars of the Premier League.

“He’s very well thought of in England and for me he’s one of the best in the world,” the former Sevilla man replied.

“He’s been at a very high standard for a few years and gives us a lot in every game.”
