Carvajal: Weight off Ronaldo

Dani Carvajal believes the goal scored by Cristiano Ronaldo in Real Madrid’s win over Schalke will ease the pressure on the forward.

Ronaldo hadn’t found the net in his previous three appearances but opened the scoring in Germany as Los Blancos took a 2-0 win, Marcelo getting the second goal.

Carvajal, who left the match early with a foot injury and is a doubt for the weekend’s game against Elche, believes the team are getting back to their best.

“We were more comfortable and we’re gradually reaching the optimal level we’re looking for,” the defender said, AS reports.

“Cristiano looked good and it’s important he scored. If it’s a weight off him, it’s better for us. We are a group and we are all one. We’ve been criticised enough.

“It’s normal what is said about Cristiano because everything is much bigger here. We know the weight on him. We have come together well and when anyone speaks ill of a teammate, they’re speaking ill of the team.

“We didn’t start the year well. We ended 2014 well but what happens is we set the bar high. We’ll work hard to do better for Madrid.”

Regarding his foot injury, Carvajal said he didn’t at that point know the extent of it but wanted to do what he could to be available on Sunday.

“I have a wound and it has caused me some pain,” he admitted.

“Let’s see how I feel [on Thursday]. I’ll try my best to play against Elche.”
