Sami Khedira has explained why he attended Cristiano Ronaldo’s controversial birthday party and discussed his Real Madrid future.
Ronaldo hosted a birthday party the same night Madrid were heavily beaten by Atletico Madrid, drawing the ire of Madrid supporters.
It was reported earlier this week that Khedira could be fined by the club for attending but he explained his presence and insisted he didn’t do anything wrong.
“If Cristiano invites me I have to go. It’s a sign of respect,” the Germany midfielder, who left El Derbi early with an injury, said, in an interview with Bild, according to AS.
“And it wasn’t really a party, just dinner. I didn’t drink any alcohol all night and went home at 1.30am.”
Khedira’s Madrid deal expires on June 30 and he has been linked with a return to the Bundesliga, with Bayern Munich mentioned as a frequent destination.
But he insists he hasn’t agreed a deal with anyone and is considering his options ahead of his free agency.
“It’s not true that I already have an agreement with a Bundesliga team,” he protested.
“My future is yet to be decided. I’m keeping my options open.”
