‘Maradona to blame for Lattek failure’

Bernd Schuster has claimed that Udo Lattek would have created a legacy at Barcelona if the club did not sign Diego Maradona.

The legendary German Coach, who died last week, managed La Blaugrana between 1981 and 1983, winning the Cup Winners’ Cup in his first season, but was dispensed just a year later following a perceived lack of domestic success.

However, according to his compatriot and former Barca protege Schuster, the arrival of the Argentine superstar for a then-world record fee ultimately undermined Lattek and prevented him from enjoying further success at the helm.

“I’m convinced that Udo would’ve been at Barcelona for a long time and enjoyed success if the club hadn’t signed Maradona,” the ex-Real Madrid and Getafe boss told Bild.

“The mentality of the two were like day and night. Lattek was always consistent in pursuing [the club’s] objectives, while Maradona took things very calmly.

“When I was in bed at nine in the evening, Diego began to enjoy the nightlife.”
