Mendes explains Valencia purchase

Super-agent Jorge Mendes has explained Peter Lim’s decision to buy Valencia, saying it was a “personal choice”.

Singapore businessman Lim, [pictured, right] completed his purchase of the club in October following protracted negotiations that lasted most of last year, while Mendes insists he had nothing to do with the deal despite some of his players having since ended up at Mestalla.

“It is very important for Spanish football that credible investors such as Peter Lim come in to challenge Barcelona and Real Madrid,” Mendes told the Singapore Sunday Times.

“I had nothing to do with the purchase. The decision to invest in a football club was purely Peter’s personal choice.

“He is a very intelligent man who has a good eye for talent,” he argued.

Mendes, who has a close personal and business relationship with the Valencia owner, also revealed he intends to expand his Gestifute organisation into Asia, saying “the future of football is in Asia and the doors to European clubs need to be opened”.
