La Real suffer Vela blow

Real Sociedad have been dealt a blow with the news that striker Carlos Vela is likely to miss the next two months through injury.

The 25-year-old Mexican international was forced to come off during La Real’s 4-1 defeat to Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu on Saturday, and it has been confirmed he will require knee ligament surgery.

“During the match held in Madrid the player suffered an injury to his right knee,” read a statement on the club’s official website.

“After early tests, labs and an MRI, we have found evidence of a torn meniscus. After consulting specialists to evaluate the best therapy options, we have decided on surgery.

“Carlos will be operated on by Dr. Mikel Sanchez. Once the surgery is complete we will issue a new medical statement.”

Former Arsenal man Vela has notched seven goals in 20 La Liga appearances for David Moyes’ team this term, and has become a key player for the Scot as the Basques attempt to climb the table following a poor start to the season.
