Arsenal close in on Valencia duo

Arsenal are planning a double transfer swoop on Valencia during the January transfer window, according to Metro.

The Gunners are keen to strengthen their defensive options for the second half of the season and are confident of prising full-backs Joao Pereira [pictured] and Jose Luis Gaya away from Mestalla.

Portuguese international Pereira, 30, has not featured this term after being told by Los Che boss Nuno Espirito Santo he was free to leave the club, although his versatility – he can also play at centre-back and in central midfield – makes him an attractive proposition for Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger.

Gaya, on the other hand, has played in all but one of Valencia’s La Liga games and at 19 is considered one of the club’s brightest prospects.

Pereira is also understood to be on Tottenham Hotspur’s wish list but Wenger feels a double deal would sway the move in his favour, although the total cost could eventually amount to around €45m.
