Henry: ‘I’d have voted for Messi’

Former Barcelona player Thierry Henry says he would have voted for Lionel Messi to win the FIFA 2014 Ballon d’Or.

The 37-year-old, who recently announced his retirement from professional football after a glittering career in which he also played for Monaco, Juventus, Arsenal and the New York Red Bulls, presented the award to eventual winner Cristiano Ronaldo but insisted he would have voted differently.

“I would have voted for Messi, although you can’t say Cristiano did not deserve it, but I played with Leo and we did many things together,” Henry is quoted as saying by Onda Cero’s ‘Al Primer Toque’ programme.

The Frenchman’s demeanour on presenting the award was criticised on social media, where he was accused of a lack of enthusiasm, and he was also asked about the current situation at Barcelona.

“I don’t see the situation at Barca very clearly but now is the time to support the team,” he maintained.
