Arjen Robben believes the ‘global brands’ of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo harm Manuel Neuer’s chances of winning the 2014 FIFA Ballon d’Or.
The recipient of the individual honour is due to be announced this evening, and the Bayern Munich winger admits his teammate is likely to suffer at the hands of the worldwide appeal enjoyed by the Clasico superstars.
“Manuel deserves it but I’m the captain of our team, and I couldn’t vote for him,” he explained to Bild.
“The decision was taken worldwide: in Australia, America, Africa… It’s a small disadvantage for Manuel that Messi and Ronaldo are trademarks and practically global brands.
“He’s crazy. He’s a goalkeeper and defender rolled into one, his quality speaks for itself.
“Although the other two also deserve it, as they’re unique players, a win for Manuel would put him in the same breath as Messi and Ronaldo.”
