Andoni Zubizarreta has leapt to the defence of Luis Enrique following Barcelona’s 1-0 defeat to Real Sociedad on Sunday.
The Catalans Coach sprung a surprise with his team selection against La Real as Lionel Messi and Neymar started the match on the bench, but the sporting director maintained that the 44-year-old knew best.
“La Real scored a goal from our own doing and we failed to find a response, despite having chances and camping in their box. Goals are what count in football,” he said after the game.
“We were conditioned by the own goal. They wanted to play against us, and we allowed them to.
“We had opportunities, and the feeling was that if we scored, things would have turned out differently, but we didn’t do so.
“For us the objective is to win with the players on the pitch. We’re all members of this club, we win together and lose together.
“I always think the Coach knows the squad’s condition [better than anyone else] and picks his team in accordance with what he considers best.
“He’ll give explanations [for his team selections] at Press conferences. I like the coaches who dare and stay true to what they believe in, regardless of the outcome.
“Whenever I think about it, he analyses the game. I don’t think he would with the idea of not winning.”
