Fernando Torres has revealed that Diego Simeone played a key role in his decision to rejoin Atletico Madrid.
The striker’s move back to the Vicente Calderon on an 18-month loan was confirmed earlier in the week, and he explained how the presence of El Cholo influenced his return to the Spanish champions at his official presentation earlier today.
“Off the field, a lot has changed. The club have become more mature and are enjoying happier times on a sporting level,” he began.
“In 24 years, I realised something very important. I needed to leave Atletico so both the club and I could grow, and they have done so without a big squad.
“It was the hardest moment of my career [to leave Atleti], but the club have proved me right. I’ve won titles in my career, but I want to win titles here too.
“El Cholo was important in me coming back. I know the club, the team and him well. I know how demanding he was as a teammate and will be as a Coach.
“I hope to understand my role quickly and go when needed. I’m here to add quality to the side.
“I understand I have an extra responsibility and can’t wait to start playing. I want to wear the shirt and jump to the fans’ needs.”
