Contra: ‘I’m leaving my home’

Cosmin Contra has explained that while he was keen to accept the offer from Guanghzou R&F, leaving Getafe is like leaving home.

It had been reported that Contra didn’t want to quit the Madrid club, who accepted a fee of €4m for his services from the Chinese outfit.

Contra said after his final game in charge, the 2-1 home defeat against Rayo Vallecano, that the prospect of a new League excites him, even if he leaves with a heavy heart.

“I thank the President for the opportunity to train in the Primera, and I thank the players,” he added, AS reports.

“I want to clarify what appeared in some news reports, stating I didn’t want to leave. That’s not true. I’ve had six wonderful years here [as a player as well as Coach] and I hope it’s only a farewell and see you soon.

“I wish all the luck in the world to the new Coach.

“If I wasn’t excited [by his new job] I wouldn’t leave. I’m leaving a great club, my home, but I’m looking forward to the experience of a League that has a lot of money. I’m young, I have enthusiasm to work and to do great things.

“I’d have no doubt about coming back to my home and the President knows it. It wouldn’t be a problem. If he wants we’ll work together again. But what I want now is Getafe to be safe.

“The team has quality and has competed so far. Whoever comes in will not have a problem doing the same.”
