Ancelotti: I want to make history

Carlo Ancelotti insists he wants to make history at Real Madrid as he reflected on what has been a fantastic year for the club.

In an interview with La Gazzetta dello Sport, the Italian also confirmed that he would be penning a contract renewal at the Santiago Bernabeu.

“I’ve coached two clubs that have made world football history. I’ve got strong ties to Milan and I will also have them with Madrid when I leave, but there’s time left and making history is more important than just winning,” said the 55-year-old.

“The situation regarding my contract renewal is quite clear. I don’t when it will be but it’s going to happen. My story here will continue.”

Ancelotti also spoke of Los Blancos winning ‘La Decima’ in Lisbon against Atletico Madrid, while revealing that the key to the season for him was defeating Barcelona in the Copa del Rey.

“We went to Lisbon with a lot of belief, something I’ve always had, because you don’t win 4-0 in Munich [against Bayern] unless it’s your year, so we couldn’t miss out in the final.

“The motivation was incredible and we talked about the obsession for La Decima. When [Sergio] Ramos equalised there were a minute and 10 seconds to go…load of time. A deserved victory.

“But the key to the season was beating Barca in the Cup. We were very nervous in the match and didn’t have Cristiano [Ronaldo]. It was the first time we’d used 4-4-2 as a defensive strategy.

“That victory in Valencia served us well for Monaco, where we set up the same way: 4-4-2 in defence and 4-3-3 when we counter-attacked.

“The 4-0 at the Allianz Arena was unforgettable and is one of my top matches, only comparable to Milan’s 3-0 against [Manchester] United in 2007. It was perfect.”
