Roberto Carlos: CR7 the best-ever?

Roberto Carlos feels Cristiano Ronaldo could well be the best-ever player in Real Madrid’s illustrious history.

The former Madrid left-back considers the Portuguese to be right up there with the club’s greats of the past, although he insists none of them will ever lose their place in history at the Santiago Bernabeu.

“Ronaldo is obviously one of the greatest but at Madrid one idol doesn’t just come along and replace another,” explained the Brazilian in an interview with AS.

“The legendary players from the past don’t lose their place at a club such as Real Madrid, which is why it is such a giant of a club.

“[Fernando} Hierro is now working alongside [Carlo] Ancelotti and Martin Vazquez, while many others have also made history and they are all respected for it.”

The 41-year-old also gave his thoughts on the current side and had a warning for the players after their 22-game winning streak.

“If they suddenly start playing badly then the fans will start whistling them. Madrid supporters are very demanding but the Bernabeu is a fantastic place to play.

“[President] Florentino [Perez] knows how to construct a team. There is a very good youth academy but he is constantly looking to bring in the best players in the world: [Toni] Kroos, James [Rodriguez], [Luka] Modric… and also Cristiano and [Iker] Casillas, who is an iconic player for Madrid despite his mistakes in some games, which is normal.

“His mistakes are highlighted because he is a goalkeeper. He’s the world’s No 1 along with Manuel Neuer.

“When you play for Real Madrid you are always under pressure – even in training sessions,” he concluded.
