Cerezo: Torres deal could happen

Atletico Madrid President Enrique Cerezo has confirmed that a deal to bring Fernando Torres back to the club could happen in January.

The Chelsea striker is currently on loan with Milan but has failed to live up to expectations in Serie A, where he has notched just one goal since his summer arrival, and Cerezo reflected on the 30-year-old’s possible return to the club where he began his career in an interview with Spanish breakfast television.

“There’s no deal for Torres but that’s not to say that it’s not going to happen,” he remarked.

“We have a great team where all the positions are well covered, but until the transfer window closes there is always the possibility of bringing a player in.

“We’re doing our best to compete for all three trophies we are involved in this season.”

Cerezo also commented on the campaign to rid his club of its ultra supporters following the death of a Deportivo la Coruna fan last month before a game at the Vicente Calderon.

“We stand against any form of violence. This, however, is a complicated matter as we have anything from 30,000 to 50,000 supporters attending games.

“On the whole these groups are well controlled but sometimes it’s difficult. At the same time, we will keep working until these radicals are eliminated from football.

“They are a minority and the only answer is to expel them from all football stadiums.”
