Abidal unsure over Barca role

Former Barcelona defender Eric Abidal says that taking an upstairs role with the Catalan giants is far from certain.

The 35-year-old announced his retirement from football last week and it was widely expected he would move into an ambassadorial role at the Camp Nou, following recent remarks from club President Josep Maria Bartomeu.

However, the Frenchman, who underwent a liver transplant in 2012 while with the Blaugrana, said he could just as easily fulfil a similar role at Greek outfit Olympiacos, whom he joined last summer.

“As you know I always speak the truth and I didn’t end my career to return to Barca. I ended it because I felt it was the right time,” said Abidal in an interview with RMC.

“Having said that, I’ve got the chance to go to Barca, although I should also say I have an opportunity at Olympiacos and have also been approached by UEFA.

“In addition, I’ve created my foundation so I need to devote some time to that. I’m going to try and do things in the best possible way.”

Abidal revealed he had been offered other positions where he could impart his experience of the game at the highest level.

“Above all these would be to try and get across what I’ve been able to learn, particularly to youngsters.

“That’s a small part of what Barca have offered me. But Olympiacos have also made me an offer to be part of their organisation in relation to sponsorship and marketing,” he added.
