San Jose: Goals important, but…

Mikel San Jose spoke of his delight at scoring in back-to-back games but insisted that Athletic Bilbao's fortunes took precedence.

Fresh from heading the winner against Shakhtar Donetsk midweek, the former Liverpool defender found the back of the net once more during Saturday's 2-1 victory over Getafe, and he was delighted to make another telling contribution for the Basques.

"For me scoring is important, but more so is the team. We are in good form and happy, but in the end we suffered," he told reporters.

"[Getafe] is a very difficult venue and the way we took the lead comforted us and gave us confidence.

"We had a very good first half, but perhaps we failed to do more at times.

"We could have finished the game without suffering, but in the end this team and our tactics worked well in all aspects.

"We knew we were going to suffer, but we didn’t expect to go 2-0 up. Although a goal can be scored in any phase of play, we had to sweat as usual.

"The team are on the ascendancy, which is what we want. The calendar will tell us if we can look up or not.

"Now, what matters is Alcoyano and Cordoba."
