Vermaelen could miss five months

Barcelona defender Thomas Vermaelen could be facing five months on the sidelines with a hamstring injury.

The Belgian international signed for the Catalans in the summer but is yet to make his debut for Luis Enrique’s team following a string of problems, despite director of football Andoni Zubizarreta saying at his presentation that he was a player capable of ‘immediate performances’.

However, that has not proved to be the case and Finnish doctor Sakari Ovara, an expert on hamstring injuries, has confirmed that Barca have consulted him about Vermaelen’s continued difficulties.

Ovara is the man who operated on Pep Guardiola when he had hamstring troubles as a player and recently worked with Barca youngster Pol Calvet.

Reports in Spain have it that Vermaelen could travel to Finland to be operated on as early as this weekend after the former Arsenal man appeared to be on the mend.
