Varane: Madrid want to win everything

Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane insists his teammates aim to win every game they play and Wednesday’s match against Basel is no different.

Los Blancos go into the Champions League Group B clash knowing they have already qualified for the next stage of the competition, while they will also clinch first place as long as Basel do not win by a scoreline which gives them the head-to-head edge on the European champions.

It is an unlikely scenario as Carlo Ancelotti’s team won the corresponding fixture at the Santiago Bernabeu 5-1, but Varane says they are determined to win no matter the situation.

“It’s going to be difficult as Basel need to win and are going to give their all, but we must be ready,” the Frenchman told Real Madrid news.

“Real Madrid always go out to win and our aim is to carry on doing that and ensure top spot, although we are not thinking of equalling the club record for consecutive wins.

“We take each game as it comes and always play with the same level of motivation. It’s important to be top of the group.”

Varane captained France against Sweden last week, scoring a late winner for Les Bleus, and was asked how he enjoyed the experience and if he wants the same responsibility at club level.

“It’s different. I play more minutes with my national team and have more responsibility. My aim is to have the same responsibility at Madrid,” he declared
