Queens Park Rangers boss Harry Redknapp says it is Martin Jol who must take the credit for turning Gareth Bale into a left-winger.
Former Tottenham Hotspur manager Redknapp told the Daily Express that most people credited him with converting the Welshman into a wide player – after he had started his career at Southampton as a left-back – yet admitted it was Dutchman Jol who should really take the plaudits.
“I played Gareth Bale on the left wing but I wasn’t the first one to do it. I saw him play there for Martin Jol at Fulham one day [when Redknapp was in charge at Portsmouth] because we were playing Tottenham Hotspur the following week.
“He was fantastic and I can’t sit here and say I was the clever one to do it.
“Martin played him on the left wing and I moved him there from left-back,” confessed Redknapp.
