Suarez: I was treated like a criminal

Luis Suarez has revealed his feelings on the four-month ban he received for biting Italy’s Giorgio Chiellini during the World Cup.

In an extract from his autobiography ‘Mi Vida, Luis Suarez’ – ‘My Life, Luis Suarez’ – Marca reports the Uruguayan as saying he felt as though he was ‘treated like a criminal".

Despite that, the Barcelona striker admits that he did make a mistake.

“It was my fault. It was the third time something like that happened and I needed help, although I was an easy target.

“Biting frightens a lot of people but it is relatively harmless, at least in the incidents I was involved in,” maintained Suarez, who compared them to a famous bite in the history of boxing.

“None of my bites was like Mike Tyson’s on Evander Holyfield, but nobody cares about that.”

He then goes on to mention his first day in the Barca dressing room after the ban was lifted and, according to Suarez, what Luis Enrique’s words were.

“He said that I had finally been taken out of Guantanamo to join everyone. They all applauded the released prisoner and I tried not to blush.”

The 27-year-old also confessed it was Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard who convinced him not to join Arsenal.

“He had a clinical eye. He told me to stay, play well at Liverpool, and that the next year Bayern Munich, Real Madrid or Barcelona would come in for me, because I had the quality to play anywhere.”
