‘Enrique does what he thinks is best’

Andoni Zubizarreta declined to criticise the starting line-up named by Barcelona Coach Luis Enrique for the hard-fought win over Almeria.

Enrique picked an unfamiliar XI and, with Barca trailing at half-time, was forced to call Neymar and Luis Suarez into the match at the interval.

Suarez proved the catalyst in turning the game around, creating goals for Neymar and Jordi Alba, and after the match, Zubi said the whole club was pleased with the result after two League games without a win.

“Winning was very important after recent results,” the sporting director said, AS reports.

“We achieved the win in the second half. It was a very hard win. The quality of our players decided the match today.

“Our greatest strength is that we haven’t given up.

“We always think the decisions of the Coach are the right ones. He puts in who he thinks is best and Pedro Rodriguez and Munir El Haddadi have given us a lot.

“The way the game went, perhaps it was necessary to bring on Suarez and Neymar.”

Zubizarreta was asked about the status of Gerard Pique, who was left out of the team once more despite being called into the Spain squad, the former goalkeeper pointing to Pique’s involvement with La Roja as proof he’s in good shape.

“He’s with the national team. I don’t know of any Coach who wants to harm himself,” he argued.

“Pique is working well and he’s doing everything to make [Enrique] put him in.”
