Benzema: The best is yet to come

Karim Benzema believes his best years are still ahead of him despite the brilliant start he has made to the 2014-15 campaign.

The Frenchman has scored in six consecutive games, taking his season’s total to 10, and is Real Madrid’s 14th-highest scorer in the club’s history, whilst he also sits 10th in the Champions League standings.

However, Benzema feels he has still not reached his full potential.

“I have some trouble saying this is the best moment of my career because I really don’t know,” remarked Benzema in an interview with AS.

“I feel good, am working well, and things are going my way. But I’m still only 26 and I think my best years are still to come.

“I’ve always heard that a footballer enters the best period of his professional life when he turns 26 and reaches full maturity.

“I work hard in training and also off the pitch. Before the players warm up at Valdebebas I come in early and do some muscular work, especially on the legs, and that helps me feel even better on the pitch.”

Benzema was asked if in Tuesday’s Champions League game with Liverpool he was trying to set up Cristiano Ronaldo to break Raul’s competition record of 71 goals.

“We didn’t talk about it before the game but of course I wanted Cristiano to break the record. I gave him a lot of passes because I wanted to see him score.

“He didn’t get the goal but with him there is no need to worry. If not Tuesday then it will be in the next game.

“He’s got the record at his fingertips and I’m sure he’s going to beat it.”
