Cholo: Atleti not through yet

Diego Simeone has said Atletico Madrid can’t look past the Champions League group stage despite being Malmo in Sweden.

Goals from Koke and Raul Garcia mean the Spanish champions are top of Group A on nine points with Juventus and Olympiacos level on six points after the Italians claimed a dramatic 3-2 win over the Greeks.

“The standings are an unusual situation and I don’t think positively because there are many possibilities,” Simeone said, AS reports.

“We’re dependant on the next match [against Olympiacos] at Vicente Calderon.”

Simeone was pleased with the win over Malmo and the contribution of Koke, which he put down to being part of a well-drilled team.

“He’s playing on a team that works collectively and consequently his quality is highlighted,” the Coach continued.

“We played a great game against a great opponent. We knew they’d be brave at home, with the young players in the team, and it’s a hard and difficult place to come. We had to have a great game.

“We knew the game would be like this, because Malmo have given a good showing in the games they’ve played so far, except the second half at the Calderon.

“We knew how we had to play. We suffered a lot for 15 or 20 minutes in the second half until the goal by Garcia.”
