‘Villarreal were better, but…’

Marcelino believes Villarreal were superior to Valencia but missed out on victory as they couldn’t capitalise on it.

Valencia won 3-1 to maintain their lofty position in the table after 10 rounds of play after a Manu Trigueros own goal and a Shkodran Mustafi brace.

Trigueros later claimed a consolation for the Yellow Submarine but it wasn’t enough to prevent Los Che claiming three points in the local derby.

“We have to compete and we have to win,” Marcelino said, according to AS, ruing a repeat of a problem from earlier in the season.

“We were better than Sevilla and we lost 2-1. Now, against Valencia we score an own goal early on and then we were better than them but we couldn’t score until the end.

“We need a little more courage to play well and take our chances.

“Villarreal were superior for 65 minutes. That’s football, but we have to make sure that doesn’t happen to us again.

“We can’t do any more in terms of intensity and attitude. We need to learn to compete at the best times and luck has also been a factor lately.

“If you look at the last five goals we’ve conceded in the League it’s clear we need a bit of luck. We have to work to change this.

“We were competing at a high level until the second goal but that killed us. We weren’t forceful in defence and we weren’t accurate when shooting at goal.”
