Caparros hits out at Marca

Granada Coach Joaquin Caparros has reacted angrily to Press coverage, claiming to have been mis-quoted by Marca.

Marca, who insist their account of a conversation between the reporter and the Coach is legitimate, claimed Caparros expressed concern ahead of playing Real Madrid.

“I only ask they don’t dominate us,” is what the newspaper’s front-page quoted Caparros saying.

Caparros responded by ripping up a copy of the offending page at the start of his Press conference.

“Experience tells me not to read newspapers or listen to anything but when there’s a headline like this, how can you believe I would make these statements?

“Everyone who knows me knows I wouldn’t even give a game away to my father, in heaven and who I love most.

“I’ve been in football a long time and these comments [make me angry]. How am I supposed to face the players in the locker room?  It’s already a difficult game and now there’s this,” AS quotes Caparros as replying.

Marca issued a response to Caparros’ comments and actions, calling for an apology for questioning their credibility in a room full of reporters.

The newspaper also added that the full quote is included inside Friday’s edition and is there in context, and argued Caparros never denied using the phrase.

“He knows what was said and I know what was said,” the journalist responsible for the story wrote.

“His reaction and behaviour in the Press room, ripping up the cover of Marca…is much more serious.

“You play with the credibility of a newspaper and its employees and immediate rectification is necessary. The truth is the truth and can’t be dealt with in a fit of rage.”
