Sergio: Espanyol will give everything

Espanyol boss Sergio Gonzalez says his team will be giving all they have in the Supercopa de Catalunya game with Barcelona on Wednesday.

The match will be played at Girona’s Estadi Montilivi ground and Sergio told a Press conference that he is aware of what a derby means, wherever it is being held.

“I know what a derby signifies and my players will be doing everything they can to compete,” remarked the 37-year-old former Espanyol midfielder.

“It is an occasion to enjoy and the fact it is the first Supercopa is motivation enough to try and win it, so we’ll put out a team that will make a good impression.”

Sergio admitted he would be selecting some players who have not had a much of a role to play so far this season.

“Any opportunity to show your ability is important and it will allow those who haven’t had many minutes to feel like footballers again, because they will be playing for a trophy.

“Barca are coming off the back of their 3-1 defeat to Real Madrid and losing to your biggest rivals is always frustrating.

“However, against us they will be free to play, which is what they do best, but we’ll get on with doing things our own way and contest everything,” declared Sergio.

Last year, as reserve team Coach, he lost the final of the Copa Catalunya against Barcelona B.

“I’m not out for revenge,” he smiled.
