Vela backs under-fire Arrasate

Real Sociedad striker Carlos Vela has backed boss Jagoba Arrasate to turn things round at the Basque club.

La Real have made a disastrous start to the season, having won just once from the opening eight League games, and the 2-1 home defeat to Getafe on Monday had fans whistling in the stands and questioning Arrasate.

Nonetheless, Mexican international Vela, elected dressing room spokesperson to attend a Press conference, says the players are fully behind the Coach and believe he is the man to turn things around.

“I’m convinced he is the ideal Coach for us and the team is behind him 100 per cent. I believe that together we will emerge from this bad run and we’ll still be together at the end of the season,” he declared.

“Only players who are brave should be out there right now and this is the time to show what we are made of, a time when the personality of the squad must come through and everybody remains united.”

Critics have pointed to the fact that the Txuri-urdin have sold their best players, with the likes of Asier Illarramendi, Antoine Griezmann and Claudio Bravo all having departed, but Vela attempted to put a positive spin on things.

“We haven’t forgotten how to play football and in this game as well as life there are ups and downs,” claimed Vela.

“When you are down you must raise yourself and when you are at the top you mustn’t believe you are the best.

“The players are very hurt about what happened on Monday. We are the first ones to look at ourselves and we realise what lies ahead.

“The Getafe game was the worst we’ve played at Anoeta. We’d been doing quite well at home but the other night it was completely the opposite.

“Even so, it’s a long season and we need to turn this situation around. If we all play our part we will move forward,” he insisted.
