Hector Herrera and Ricardo Queresma scored as Porto beat Athletic Bilbao, Guillermo’s goal not enough for Los Leones.
The result means Athletic are now nine games without a win across League and European fixtures and face a battle with BATE Borisov – hammered 7-0 at home by Shakhtar Donetsk – for third place and a second chance in the Europa League.
Herrera put Porto in front on the stroke of half-time before Guillermo equalised after the break, only for former Barca winger Queresma to decide the tie in favour of Julen Lopetegui’s side.
Lopetegui, former Coach of the Spain Under-21 side, named a squad full of Spanish representation, with Casemiro and Christian Tello, on loan from Real Madrid and Barcelona respectively, starting the match.
Porto: Fabiano; Danilo, Maicon, Martins Indi, Alex Sandro; Casemiro, Herrera, Quintero; Tello, Martinez, Brahimi
Athletic Bilbao: Iraizoz; De Marcos, Etxeita, Laporte, Balenziaga; San Jose, Iturraspe, Rico; Guilermo, Aduriz, Susaeta
