David Silva believes Spain should not change the way they play despite some disappointing results this year.
La Roja’s failure at the World Cup in Brazil and the Euro 2016 qualifier defeat to Slovakia has reopened the debate over whether Vicente del Bosque’s team might employ an alternative style.
However, in an interview with FIFA.com, the Manchester City midfielder dismissed the notion, although he did not entirely rule it out.
“We’ve won two European Championships and one World Cup playing like we do, so I think this idea of changing doesn’t even warrant discussion.
“Having said that, there are different phases in every game that might push you to try different options, so why not?” said Silva, who admitted it was now strange to line up for Spain without Xavi Hernandez and Xabi Alonso in the team.
“We miss them both on and off the pitch as we went through so much with them. They are your teammates and your friends, but that’s the way it is.
“In a few years’ time it will be my turn and I’ll miss it too. That’s why you need to make the most of it every time you are called up.
“As you get older the anticipation is even greater. As a youngster I used to see the older players absolutely delighted to be with the national team, and now I understand why.
“You know that your time is limited and you have to enjoy it,” he conceded.
The former Valencia man described what it is like to now be one of the veterans in the side.
“I’ve been part of the set-up for eight years. I played in two full European Championships, but not much in South Africa 2010, while I played this year in Brazil and also at the Confederations Cup.
“As long as I get the chance to play I’ll give my all, but I don’t think my role has changed just because some teammates have retired.
“All that has changed is that I’m older, although I have to say the youngsters coming through are reallt well prepared.
“They are all very good and we are hoping they can lead the team to the level necessary to win even more titles,” he concluded.
