Cornella request Madrid switch

UE Cornella will make a formal request to switch their Copa del Rey home tie with Real Madrid to the Power8 stadium.

The Catalan minnows are due to host Carlo Ancelotti’s men in the Last 32 on October 29, the game having been brought forward as Madrid are involved in December’s World Club Championship in Morocco.

However, their tiny Nuevo Municipal ground has room for just 1,500 spectators compared to the 40,500-capacity Power8, formerly named Cornella El Prat and the home of Espanyol.

As a result Cornella plan to ask the Spanish Football Federation if the fixture can be moved, as relocating it would have a significant impact in increasing revenue through the turnstiles.

They will also argue that the Power 8’s close proximity – the two stadiums are practically next door to each other – means it makes sense to stage the game at a bigger venue.
