‘Cristiano has €1bn release clause’

Jorge Mendes has said that Cristiano Ronaldo’s Real Madrid scoring record should get more acclaim, and he would cost €1bn to sign from Los Blancos.

Mendes has been publically praising his client, with AS reporting the agent as predicting Ronaldo will stay at Santiago Bernabeu until the day he retires, despite mooted interest from Manchester United.

Asked about the release clause in Ronaldo’s contract, Mendes claimed it was such an astronomical sum as to prevent any club taking him away from Madrid.

He added that as long as Ronaldo stays fit, he’ll set a new goals record for a single season and suggested Ronaldo deserves more credit for his scoring exploits.

“The price of his clause is €1,000m [€1bn],” Mendes said.

“I’m sure he’s going to beat his personal record [of 60 goals] if there’s no physical problem.

“Nothing is impossible for Cristiano and he will continue to evolve and improve until he retires.

“Note that Cristiano is a winger, not a striker, and his numbers are outrageous. He plays very far from goal and has to make a great effort to reach the penalty area.

“So everything he has achieved has more merit.

“Everyone can see what he’s like: phenomenal.”
