Keylor: ‘I didn’t speak to Iker’

Real Madrid goalkeeper Keylor Navas says he did not speak to Iker Casillas prior to making his debut in the 5-1 win over Elche.

However, the Costa Rican, who replaced Casillas between the sticks for his first official game following his summer signing from Levante, revealed he has a good working relationship with the Madrid captain.

“It was a great opportunity and a privilege for me [to make my debut] as the Madrid shirt represents a lot.

“I was really happy even though I didn’t have much to do, but the team won and that is the important thing,” he told reporters post-match.

“I spoke to the Coach the day before and he told me I would be playing. I’m very keen to get this kind of chance but I didn’t speak with Iker about it, although we have a good relationship.

“There’s not a lot to say about the matter [of who boss Carlo Ancelotti selects] as we are both available to the coaching staff.”

Navas also stressed he is not one to court controversy and is at Real Madrid solely to work hard and gain a regular place in the starting line-up.

“I like to work hard, to earn things. I’m here to train to the best of my ability and show the coaches I can play.

“When I get the chance I’ll go out onto the pitch as if it was the last game of my life and give everything for this shirt. It’s an honour to be here and I consider myself just one more member of the group.

“I don’t feel anything more or anything less. I respect my teammates and have my dreams, my goals, and I also have my ability. I strive every day for the sake of Real Madrid,” he added.
