New Barcelona full-back Douglas believes he is already a better player despite joining the Catalans less than one month ago.
The Brazilian was only brought in from Sao Paolo at the end of August for a reported €4m plus €1.5m in add-ons. Yet, in an interview on the club’s official website, he says he has already been amazed at the difference in him.
“Everything is completely different and ever since I landed it has been great. Going into training is out of this world because everything is so organised and the planning is faultless,” claimed the 24-year-old.
“Defensively, under Luis Enrique I am improving every day and adapting quickly to the tactical requirements here. I’m very keen to improve and I know what I am capable of showing in a Barcelona shirt.
“It’s difficult to say I’m ready as I’ve only just arrived and have to get used to the city, while the style of play is also very different – but I feel like I am ready!”
Despite operating as a defender during his professional career, Douglas revealed it was not until he was 17 years old that he moved into the back line.
“I started as a striker and played eight months there. Then, at football school, I moved into midfield and played there until I was 17.
“One day we had an injury at left-back so the Coach picked me in that position, and that’s where I ended up. Full-back is where I want to find my place in world football and I where I most like to be,” he admitted.
Finally, he spoke of who his idols were when he was a youngster and who he tried to imitate.
“You learn a bit from everybody but Dani Alves had the most skill. Cafu was like a world class athlete and you could see that when he was Brazil captain.
“Everyone gives you a good example to follow and you must learn from them all. Right now I’m looking for a place at Barca.
“I’m here to win trophies and make the crowd happy,” he concluded.
